Heroes, Identities and Histories

Human beings are story-telling animals. We tell each other stories to give meaning to the world but also to reflect who we are, both as individuals and as a community. One of the most persistent and popular forms of stories we tell each other are stories about heroes; extraordinary people who do great good for others. But why are heroic stories so enduringly popular? And what do such stories tell us about ourselves? I will discuss these questions using examples from one of the most popular forms of entertainment of the 20th and 21st century: Superhero comics and movies.
